Post Match Report
We agreed that as Oak Lake was an unknown quantity we would count all carp landed irrespective of size. It was interesting to see the different approaches being used by the mostly experienced pairs fishing this event. By the end of Friday 3 pairs had caught, Chris Donovan and partner Jason Monk had come out second in the draw and gone for peg 1. They decided to fish with method feeders and small baits to target the stockies. This seemed like a good choice at this stage as they had weighed 8 fish for over 50lb. Next was Shaun Atkinson and Gaz Elliott in peg 9 with 2 fish for over 20lb. Next door in peg 8 Ste Alford and Dean Crust were on almost 14lb. Saturday saw the lake settle down and a few more fish started to grace the bank. The guys in peg 1 were adding fish on a regular basis and had an impressive 149lb by the time my head hit the pillow on Saturday night. In addition to peg 1, eight other pegs had caught and it was looking like a very competitive contest in the making.
By first light Sunday Chris and Jason had what looked like an unassailable lead, but who knows what could happen with any of the pairs more than capable of bagging a few decent fish to turn the scoreboard on it’s head. With about four hours remaining Shaun and Gaz were in second place on 73lb+, followed by Jamie Lisewski and David Halpin, peg 4, on over 54lb having caught the biggest fish of the match at 19lb 9oz. Next were peg 3 Steve Blow and Scott Dowse on 50lb 5oz. In 5th place and starting to bag a few were Scotland internationals Kevin McConnell and Alister Kirkhope on 43lb, followed by the rest of the field not to far behind. In a late surge fish were starting to be landed from both sides of the lake. Peg 9 landed their 6th fish to cement their runners up slot but Kevin and Alister in peg 10 were the biggest movers bringing another three fish to the scales and moving up into third. Steve and Scott landed one last fish but still dropped down to fourth. Unfortunately this meant Jamie and David were pushed down to fifth and out of the qualifying places. Mean while back in peg 1 Jason landed one last fish for the winners just prior to the final hooter. Nine out of the ten pairs competing caught. There were 69 fish landed during the match for a combined weight of 516lb 6oz. We had 12 doubles out up to 19lb 9oz and the average was 7.5lb per fish.
Congratulations to the top four pairs and good luck in the Northern final at Poolbridge Farms Q Lake on the 18th, 19th and 20th August.
