Wyreside Sunny 2

Final - 12/08/2016

The Fishery is situated on the Duchy of Lancaster’s Wyreside Estate.

Originally our trout water, yet carp have resided in this lake since 1984. In October 2004, 100 carp were introduced between 11 and 25lbs. The original carp have grown, although sizes are yet unknown in this relatively new lake. The top weight now stands at 32.10lbs (common carp).
SUNNY 2 has a small island and quite a lot of open water. Both average depths between 5 to 8ft. Margins are definitely worth fishing.
HOT SPOTS – Again can be wind direction dependant. Corner swims always seem to hold the fish, for example, pegs 9, 14, 15 on Sunny 2 and pegs 8 and 9 on Sunny 1.
ACCESSIBILTIY –Good. 2 Car parks and parking behind all roadside swims.

There is a bar & restaurant, so you don't even have to pack any food supplies, we can even deliver it to your door (bivvy) step.

Pre Match Report

This event could prove to be one of the most exciting we have had. Darren Wilcox and Jason Trought have been the champions for the last two years. Could they make it three on the trot? Paul Monkman and Alan Atkinson were the champions just before them in 2013. Simon Bury has probably been amongst the most consistent anglers in our competitions. Last year reaching Northern, Midlands and British finals. Whilst the year before he reached all 3 regional finals and then went on to lift the British Carp Cup. We also have Marc Johnson, Jaye Carpmail and Jamie Craine who are 1st, 2nd and 3rd in this year’s biggest fish competition. In the team event DNA have 47 points, while Phatfish have 44. Chris Donovan and Craig Ridge are fishing for DNA in this event. While Paul Monkman and Alan Atkinson are fishing for Phatfish and there are only 3 points separating them. All in all it’s looking like alot of scores could be settled this weekend. Apart from the above names there is a strong field of experienced carp match anglers, some with local knowledge of this venue. I personally can’t wait to see what develops. Good luck to all taking part.

Post Match Report

On Thursday evening and Friday morning pegs 9, 10 and 11 on the far side of the island were alive with fish and not much showing elsewhere, but that was with no angling pressure on the lake. Our finals are out of the bag draws, so the guys who drew those pegs seemed very happy with the outcome. Following the draw all the anglers made their way to the pegs and started to get ready for the 12 noon hooter. It was a very quiet start to the match until Jamie Simpson and Dean Allaway in peg 5 landed the first fish of the contest. This came in the shape of an 11lb 10oz , mirror at 7:30pm. No more fish were forthcoming until the early hours of Saturday morning. Three pegs caught six fish between them before breakfast. Simon Bury fishing by himself in the point swim, peg 12, had three for 49lb 10oz. Marc Johnson and Jamie Price in peg 2 had 2 fish for 34lb 8oz. Anthony Warrington and Jaye Carpmail had the best of the bunch, a nice 21lb 3oz mirror. There was heavy rain and strong winds hacking into the road bank on Friday night. By morning the rain had eased but the wind was still in the same direction. Which seemed to liven up one particular area. Chris Donovan and Craig Ridge, in road bank peg 1 were yet to catch. But in a hectic spell between 10:30am and 7pm Saturday they banked six carp to storm into the lead. Along with the six fish landed they also had some tench and lost carp. Two more pegs had a brace apiece in the evening to join the scoreboard. Peg 7’s Dan Robson and Shane Fletcher and next door Shaun Atkinson and Gaz Elliott in peg 8. Now things were starting to get interesting with seven pegs having fish and a proper contest in the making. Coming into Saturday night the top four looked like this. Chris and Craig were in front followed by Simon Bury then Marc Johnson and Jamie Price, finally, Dan Robson and Shane Fletcher were coming into the equation. There were also other pegs now catching and snapping at their heals. By Sunday morning, Dan and Shane had added another two fish to their tally putting them in runners up spot for the briefest of periods, but a call from Simon Bury, in peg 12 opposite, changed all that as he had another fish in the net. At long last we had the first fish from the far side of the island as Mark Hardcastle slid the net under a lovely 20lb 10oz mirror for Chris Ehlert. This meant another pair were now on the board.

At this stage Chris and Craig were getting a little twitchy as they hadn’t seen a fish since 7pm on Saturday and other pegs were now starting to catch. The didn’t need to worry, at 10:30am they had the last fish of the event to cement their victory. At this point Nathan Allen, of Pixifly Media had the drone up and managed to film the whole thing from the air. Amongst their fish was a cracking 24lb 10oz common which was the biggest of the weekend. That win also gave DNA victory in the team event, adding another 24 points to their total.

Meanwhile Paul Monkman and Alan Atkinson suffered lost fish but didn’t manage to land any so couldn’t add to PhatFish’s team points. As well as qualifying for the British Carp Cup final, Marc Johnson ended up winning this year’s biggest fish competition with his capture of Cluster at 36lb 10oz from Tyram Fisheries in the first qualifier of the year in April.

We had a total of 22 fish caught during this final, which was shared between 8 pegs, even some of the 4 pegs that blanked lost fish during the weekend. So all in all it shouldn’t make a bad programme. Look out for it on BT Sport in November.
