Thorney Weir

Final - 05/08/2016

Thorney Weir is a beautiful lake of 17.5 acres lined with mature trees and offering a great many features to fish to, including islands both large and small, sunken barges, plateaus, gravel bars, and weed beds.
Four carp have been banked over the 40lb mark with ‘Chubbers’ (published in Carp Talk, May 2000) regularly weighing in at 46lb+, and there are at least 25 thirties in the lake with some fantastic looking scaled fish among these. The big Ghostie has been banked twice that we know of at over 37lb. All of which are backed up by a large head of twenties and many double figure carp.
There is a toilet on site.

Pre Match Report

For the first time we are privileged to be able to use this well renowned Colne Valley water. This is our second regional final of the year which is being filmed by Nathan Allen of Pixifly Media to be aired on BT Sport in November this year. This lake has some stunning residents and we cannot wait to see what transpires in this event. All the competitors must register by 8:30am Friday. The out of the bag match style draw will then take place at 9am. Baiting and marking will be after the first hooter at 11am followed by the second hooter at noon which signifies the start of the competition. This event along with all the others is sponsored by Spomb.

Post Match Report

With air pressure in the high 1020’s all weekend, combined with dry, hot, sunny weather, the conditions were far from perfect. On Thursday evening we witnessed fish showing all over the lake. Once all the competitors were settled in their pegs and cast out at noon Friday, things were considerably quieter. Even so we only had to wait just under a couple of hours for the first fish to arrive and it was a pretty fully scaled mirror of 15lb+ which fell to the rods of Bryan Houghton and John Picking in the well known blue rope channel swim. No more fish were caught until the early hours of Saturday, when Bryan and John in peg 1 added another 3 fish to their tally by first light. All the other swims on the lake remained dormant, with the only action coming from peg 4 where Jack Lamb and Joey O’kelly lost a fish in some snags on Friday evening.

Sunday took the same shape as Saturday had with four fish out between the early hours and first light, but again three were banked by the leaders in peg 1. The fourth fish was caught by brothers William and Ricky Dummer, it was a common of 12lb 9oz. Which proved to be a very valuable catch in more ways than one. It gave the boys second place with a cheque for £1,000 to share and 22 points for Phatfish in the team event. This was crucial as it put them just 3 points behind DNA, with only the Northern Final left for teams to collect points.

Bryan and John secured a landslide victory from peg 1, also collecting maximum points for team Spomb to give then third place overall behind DNA and Phatfish, who will battle it out in next weeks final for the winners and runners up spot.

Jamie Londors / Bobby Marvin, Christian Hughes / Blain Pickering and Aj Collier / Josh Winfield all lost fish late Sunday morning, so a cast off to determine third and fourth place was now inevitable. After some truly consistent and accurate casting, Darren Pearse and Ashley Izzard took third place. While Cliff Kemp and Brian Byford settled in the fourth qualifying spot for the British Carp Cup final at Branston Water Park, Burton on Trent, on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th September.
